Freedom Exhibition
I was fortunate enough to be part of the Curators Team for Suffolk Pride’s Freedom Exhibition 2021. If you follow the Guy Cry Club blog you may recall seeing the original call for art, inviting local creatives to submit visual artwork in response to the theme of ‘Freedom’. I was joined by members of Suffolk Pride, Young Artists in Suffolk, Creative Curve as well as the artist Cherry Fizz Whizz to create and curate every aspect of this exhibition. From discussing themes and designing promotional materials, to publishing the call for art and reviewing submissions, our collaboration led to a gallery space being brought to life with queer voices as well as those of queer allies. The work was on show at The Whistler Gallery, within DanceEast, whilst the exhibition as a whole was led by Suffolk Pride and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Below you will see a snapshot of the exhibition, taken by me. For the official gallery of images taken by Alexander Ward, a fantastic ally and dear friend to Guy Cry Club CIC, visit our social media channels.
Personally, the experience of curating this exhibition was of great value to me. There were a couple of sentiments in particular which became instilled in me as a result of my involvement; that I have a place within the queer community locally, and that I am recognised to be a collaborator and curator. Independently, these ideas are significant. Together they make me incredibly proud, immensely grateful and is a huge encouragement for me to carry on striving for more. To go beyond the expected.
Thanks not only to Suffolk Pride for inviting me to be part of this exhibition, but to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in their support of the project, to DanceEast for the use of their space, to the other members of the curators team who are all excellent team players and creative leaders in their disciplines of choice, to all the amazing artists that submitted work and to everyone that came along to view the exhibition.
Check out the digital exhibition put together by Molly Gooding (Young Artists in Suffolk). It features more artwork from the artists who contributed to the physical exhibition as well as more information about each piece of artwork from the artists themselves.
